Newcastle
About the chapter
Newcastle basically built the modern world. Newcastle was the birthplace of modern steel production methods. The region's coal powered global industry, exported around the world (along with Earl Grey tea, of course) in ships built on the banks of the Tyne, revolutionised by Charles Parsons' steam turbines.
George Stephenson's steam trains launched the railway age. Joseph Swan essentially invented the light bulb and Lord Armstrong put them in his house - the first in the world to have electricity. Hell, George Washington's ancestors set off for the New World, from… Washington carrying the family's coat of arms featuring stars and stripes.
But we've forgotten all of this. LFG Newcastle is here to remind people what we're capable of.
